Guidelines for the Construction of Fire Retardant Coatings for Steel Structures

In the field of construction engineering, the application of steel structures is becoming increasingly widespread, and steel structure fireproof coatings are the key defense line to ensure their structural stability in a fire. Understanding the construction methods of fire-resistant paint and coatings for steel structures is crucial for ensuring building fire safety.
Accurate preparation work is the foundation before construction. Thoroughly clean and pre treat the surface of the steel structure. Remove impurities such as oil stains, dust, rust, and old coatings to achieve a smooth, dry, and appropriately rough surface, in order to promote good adhesion of fireproof coatings. The key to this step is to choose a reputable steel structure fireproof coating manufacturer. For some complex structural parts, such as corner braces and cow legs of steel structures, brushing is more advantageous. When brushing, attention should be paid to evenly brushing to avoid sagging and missed brushing, ensuring complete coverage of the coating.

The construction of thick coated fireproof coatings for steel structures is relatively complex. Spray coating is commonly used due to its high viscosity, requiring high-power and high-pressure spraying equipment. Taking a large sports stadium project as an example, the construction team used professional high-pressure airless spraying equipment to adjust the coating pressure to a suitable range, so that the coating could be smoothly sprayed and evenly adhered to the surface of the steel structure. The thickness of each layer of coating can reach 5-10 millimeters, but attention should be paid to controlling the spraying speed and thickness uniformity to prevent coating cracking or hollowing. After each layer of spraying, wait for 24-48 hours for the coating to fully dry and cure before proceeding to the next layer of construction. During the construction process, special treatment should be carried out on key parts such as connection nodes and edges of steel structures, such as increasing coating thickness or using reinforcement nets to ensure the fire resistance of these parts.

During the construction process, environmental factors cannot be ignored. The construction environment temperature should be controlled between 5-35 ℃, and the relative humidity should not exceed 85%. Under high temperature, high humidity, or strong wind conditions, it may affect the drying speed, adhesion, and coating quality of the coating. If construction is carried out during the high temperature period in summer, cooling measures or adjusting the construction time should be taken to avoid surface cracking caused by rapid drying of the coating; In humid weather, it is necessary to ensure that the surface of the steel structure is fully dry before construction, or use dehumidification equipment to improve the construction environment.

After the construction is completed, comprehensive quality inspection is the last hurdle to ensure the fire prevention effect. By using professional instruments to test whether the coating thickness meets the design requirements, the error is generally required to be within the specified range. At the same time, adhesion testing should be conducted using methods such as grid cutting to ensure that the coating is tightly adhered to the surface of the steel structure and will not easily peel off in the event of a fire.

In short, the construction of fire-resistant paint and coatings for steel structures is a meticulous and rigorous process. From preliminary preparation to construction operation, and then to quality inspection, every step cannot be separated from professional technology and standardized processes.
